Tiered Commission vs Flat Subscription for Professional Cat Sitters

Meowtel's commission falls the longer you keep a client — 30% at the start, 15% once that client has spent enough with you. It is the most retention-friendly commission structure we have found in this category. It is still a percentage of every booking. Here is how the two models compare.

How Commission Marketplaces Work

Commission marketplaces generate revenue by taking a percentage of each transaction processed through the platform. Most charge one flat rate to every sitter on every booking, forever. Meowtel does something more interesting than that, and it deserves to be described accurately before it is compared.

  • The platform connects pet owners with sitters and processes payments on behalf of both parties.
  • A percentage of each booking is retained by the platform before the sitter receives payment.
  • On Meowtel that percentage is tiered per client, by cumulative earnings from that client: 30% from $0–299, 25% from $300–999, 20% from $1,000–2,999, and 15% above $3,000.
  • The ladder is per client rather than per sitter — every new client starts again at the top rate.
  • Pet owners pay their own fee at checkout, on top of the sitter's rate.

Commission models lower the barrier to entry — you pay nothing until you earn — which helps a marketplace build liquidity. Meowtel's tiering is a genuine refinement of that idea: by lowering its own take as a client relationship deepens, it gets cheaper exactly where most marketplaces stay expensive. It is the closest thing in this market to a platform being paid for the introduction rather than for standing between you and the client indefinitely, and it deserves credit for that.

Meowtel launched in 2015 and does one thing: cat care, in the owner's own home, across select cities and states in the United States. Drop-in visits are bookable in 20, 45 or 60-minute increments, overnight stays run a minimum of twelve hours, and there is no boarding at the sitter's home. Every sitter is background-checked by a third party, and onboarding is short — roughly four steps, typically approved in about two days. Rover announced its acquisition of Meowtel on 28 January 2026, citing over 4,000 providers serving more than 125,000 cats in over 8,000 cities, with eleven employees joining. Unlike Cat in a Flat, Meowtel still operates as an independent brand under co-founders Sonya Petcavich (CEO) and Bruno Leveque (CTO), and its published fee pages make no mention of Rover as of 16 August 2026.

The 12-Month Economics

Two notes before the numbers. The calculator uses a single 25% rate — Meowtel's own middle rung — because the real rate depends on how deep each individual client relationship is: a sitter constantly adding new clients sits nearer 30%, one with a few long-standing regulars nearer 15%. And the booking figures are in Australian dollars for consistency with the rest of these pages; our subscription is priced in euros and Meowtel bills in US dollars. The currency is not the point, the model is. California is a separate case on the sitter side: no commission is charged there, and a 30% service fee is built into the displayed rate instead.

The Pet Sitter's Free plan costs €0 and takes 0% commission. Measured against the Pro plan's founding rate of €199/year + VAT, a 25% commission costs the same at approximately €66/month in bookings. Even at Meowtel's best 15% tier, the break-even sits at approximately €111/month.

Part-time sitter (A$800/month)

Meowtel (25% mid-tier)A$2,400/yr
Flat subscription€199/yr

At this level, a 25% commission costs A$2,400/year. The Pro founding rate is a flat €199/year + VAT, so most of that A$2,400 stays with you. At the 30% entry tier, where every new client starts, the commission is higher still.

Regular sitter (A$2,000/month)

Meowtel (25% mid-tier)A$6,000/yr
Flat subscription€199/yr

At A$2,000/month, a 25% commission is A$6,000/year. The Pro founding rate stays at €199/year + VAT, so almost all of that A$6,000 is retained earnings instead.

Full-time professional (A$4,000/month)

Meowtel (25% mid-tier)A$12,000/yr
Flat subscription€199/yr

At full-time professional volume, a 25% commission reaches A$12,000/year against a flat €199/year + VAT. Even if every client you had reached the best 15% tier, the commission would still be A$7,200/year.

Meowtel's ladder does something almost no other marketplace does: it charges you less the longer you keep a client. Credit where it is due — that is the right instinct, and it is rare. Two things are still worth noticing. The reward for loyalty is a smaller percentage rather than the absence of one; at the top tier the platform continues to take 15% of every booking for the life of the relationship. And the ladder resets with each new client, so a sitter actively growing a business spends much of their time on the expensive rungs. Under a flat annual fee there are no rungs at all: the second booking with a client costs the same as the two-hundredth, which is nothing.

What Each Model Optimises For

What commission models optimise for

  • Transaction volume

Revenue scales with the number and value of bookings processed, so the platform is incentivised to keep transactions flowing through its own payment rails.

  • Retention inside the platform

Meowtel is the exception worth naming here: its tiering actively rewards a sitter for keeping a client on the platform rather than taxing that relationship at the same rate forever.

  • New client acquisition

Every new client enters at the top rate, so a steady supply of first-time relationships is worth more per dollar to the platform than a mature one.

What subscription models optimise for

  • Sitter retention

Revenue depends on sitters continuing to find value in the tools and the marketplace. The platform is incentivised to make sitters successful, not just busy.

  • Repeat client value

With no per-transaction cost, repeat clients become more profitable with each return booking rather than merely less expensive.

  • Business growth

A sitter earning more does not cost the platform more, and adding a client costs nothing at all. There is no rung to climb back down.

Meowtel's ladder narrows a gap most commission platforms leave wide open, and it is the fairest treatment of repeat clients we have found among percentage models. The structural difference remains: at the best tier the platform still earns 15% of everything a long-standing client pays you, and every new client starts at 30% again. On The Pet Sitter the Free plan costs nothing and the Pro plan is a flat €199/year + VAT at the founding rate — the platform earns nothing from the relationship you spent two years building.

Who Should Use Which Model?

Neither model is universally better, and for most readers of this page it is not a live choice: Meowtel operates in the United States only. What follows is about which model fits the business you are building.

A tiered commission marketplace may suit you if

You sit cats in the United States

Meowtel serves select US cities and states and nowhere else. Outside the US it is simply not an option, and it does not operate in Australia.

You keep a small number of long-standing clients

The tiering pays off for exactly this shape of business: a handful of regulars who each pass $3,000 in cumulative spend earn you Meowtel's lowest rate, and 15% is a genuinely competitive number for a marketplace that also handles vetting and payments.

You want no standing cost

Beyond the one-time Profile Review Fee at onboarding, you pay only when you earn. If you sit occasionally, that is proportional in a way an annual subscription is not.

A subscription model may suit you if

You are building a professional business

Once bookings are regular, a fixed cost beats any percentage. Against the 25% middle tier, the Pro founding rate of €199/year + VAT breaks even at approximately €66/month in bookings — and the Free plan itself costs nothing.

You add new clients regularly

Under a tiered commission, growth means repeatedly restarting at the highest rate. Under a flat fee, the hundredth client costs exactly what the first one did: nothing extra.

You want to own your client relationships

A subscription model does not need to sit between you and your clients. You build direct relationships and a portable reputation, with a CRM, invoicing and calendar tools that belong to your business rather than to a marketplace.

You are thinking long-term

The gap between a fixed cost and a percentage widens every month you grow. A rate that falls with loyalty slows that widening; it does not stop it.

An Honest Note on Where We Are

You can start on Free with your own profile page, permanent booking link, bookings, messaging and limited client records. Pro adds business tools including invoice generation when available. Check the pricing page for current Pro availability and the applicable offer; signing up for Free does not reserve a founding subscription. In-product sitter search is on the roadmap.

And the honest framing of this comparison: Meowtel is United States only, so a sitter outside the US is not choosing between Meowtel and us today, and we are not going to imply otherwise. A US cat sitter is — our software sells worldwide, and a sitter in any country can subscribe. This page compares models — a percentage of every booking against a flat annual fee — because that choice is real everywhere, whichever platforms happen to operate where you live.

What we are building is infrastructure for professional sitters who want to own their business economics: predictable costs, direct client relationships, and a fee that does not grow because you did. If that is where you are heading, we would like to build it with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Meowtel's commission actually work?

It is tiered per client, by how much you have earned from that client in total: 30% from $0–299, 25% from $300–999, 20% from $1,000–2,999, and 15% once cumulative earnings pass $3,000. The rate falls as the relationship deepens, which is unusual and genuinely to Meowtel's credit. The ladder is per client, so each new client starts again at 30%. In California no sitter commission is charged; a 30% service fee is built into the displayed rate instead.

What is the Meowtel Profile Review Fee?

A one-time, non-refundable fee paid during onboarding. The amount is not published on Meowtel's fee pages, so we will not put a number on it — ask them directly before completing your application if it matters to your decision.

Has Meowtel changed since Rover acquired it?

Not visibly, so far. Rover announced the acquisition on 28 January 2026, citing over 4,000 providers serving more than 125,000 cats in over 8,000 cities, with eleven employees joining. Meowtel continues to operate as an independent brand under co-founders Sonya Petcavich and Bruno Leveque, and its published fee pages make no mention of Rover as of 16 August 2026. The one precedent worth knowing rather than predicting from: Cat in a Flat's sitters were migrated onto Rover's fee schedule seventeen months after that acquisition was announced.

Is Meowtel available in Australia?

No. Meowtel operates in select cities and states across the United States only, so an Australian sitter is not choosing between the two today. A cat sitter in one of those US cities is — our software sells worldwide, and a sitter in any country can subscribe. We compare the two because the model question — a percentage of every booking versus a flat annual fee — applies wherever you sit.

When does a flat subscription become cheaper than Meowtel's commission?

The Pet Sitter's Free plan costs nothing, with 0% commission. Against the Pro plan's founding rate of €199/year + VAT, the 25% middle tier costs more above approximately €66/month in bookings; even Meowtel's best 15% tier costs more above approximately €111/month. Most regular sitters pass both thresholds quickly.

Can I use both platforms at the same time?

Yes, where both are available to you. Many professional sitters list on several platforms while building a client base, and there are no exclusivity requirements on our side.

A commission that falls with loyalty is a good idea. A fee that never touches a booking is a better one.

Your tools. Your clients. Your business.
